Prevent Early Age Gaming Addiction By Teaching Kids To Use Devices

Early age game addiction seems to be afflicting kids everywhere. One of the reasons is due to the fact that kids are handed devices from a very young age, sometimes to pacify them so that adults can go about their own business without interruption.

No doubt we live in a digital world now and many kids are born in a digital age. These kids will grow up with digital devices that have become more and more advanced, smaller and more mobile allowing kids and adults both alike to bring them everywhere on the go. This can lead to unhealthy practices of gaming on the go which encourages gaming addiction.

How To Prevent Early Age Gaming Addiction

Technology can be a double age sword. Computers and mobile devices can be used in many ways, good as well as bad. It is not the devices that are bad or cause addiction, it is our handling and use of the devices.

To prevent early age game addiction, kids should be taught from young that these devices can be used to learn and not as a mere tool for entertainment. They can be used to create rather than to watch or play passively.

Parents should monitor device time or usage of technology to make sure that children are not exposed to inappropriate advertisement and watch out for signs of addiction like temper tantrums when unable to access device or game, spending more and more time on the game, dry or red eyes, loss of interest in other activities etc.

Instead of allowing young kids to use the devices to play mindless games, watch inappropriate YouTube videos or listen to age-inappropriate music, kids should be encouraged to use the devices for educational purposes.

This will show them that technology can be used not only for entertainment but also for interactive learning, creation and a allow them to experience a new and different learning experience all together. When kids are taught this at a young age, they will be more likely to use technology in a good way.

Did you know that kids from as young as 6 years old can start to learn coding?

Using devices for educational purpose is not boring. Learning to code is not difficult or a field for adult engineers only. As mentioned earlier, we are now in the digital age. Our daily appliances have digital elements and apps to make them work. Someone wrote a code to make them work.

Kids should know that even the games that they play require someone to write a code to make it work. By allowing kids to learn to get behind the scenes to code their own games, you are empowering them and encouraging creativity. Coding classes also have team programming where children will learn team work. This will help to overcome the reduced social interaction from excessive gaming.

If you wish to find out more about coding and whether this is something that your child will be keen on, you can try out the free trial class offered by KidoCode at Solaris. Go here to book your session now.

  1. Technology has its pros and cons. I am afraid that the younger generation will just depend everything on it. I know a lot of children who become lazy to go out and play under the sun. They prefer to stay in bed all day and tinker with their gadgets. Sad reality.
