School Refusal In Children When Going Back To School

Some children are excited to go to school, experience a new environment, and meet new friends. However, many seem stressed, demotivated, or even afraid to go to school. This problem is apparent, especially in children who have just started formal schooling, such as in kindergarten or primary school. Some have gone through their respective school sessions but dislike them slowly. This phenomenon is called ‘school refusal’.

What exactly is school refusal?

It occurs when a child becomes unruly and upset at the idea of going to school. This reaction is normal; attending school is a transition in that child’s life, and some may struggle.

How do you know if your child has school refusal?

There are a couple of signs parents could identify. The most common is when a child launches a tantrum or cries/yells. Another common sign is that the child seems to be suddenly disengaged/disinterested. Thirdly, your child may experience unexplainable anxiety when the school day approaches.

What are the causes of school refusal?

It could be due to several reasons. Were there problems at school or home? They could be experiencing conflicts, bullying, and teasing. Low academic results can also have an impact on the kid’s emotional state and could influence them to refuse to go to school. They may not like the teacher at school or the environment, which can make them very disengaged and not find the school enjoyable. Factors outside school can influence the children, like moving homes or school. A conflict at home is another contributing factor.

What can parents do?

We need to understand the issue behind school refusal. Different children have different reasons. We need to address the underlying issue as it could be bigger than a simple nervousness. As parents, we need to normalise the emotions that children feel. Give them space to talk about their feelings and experiences instead of asking them about them every time. Make sure you listen and acknowledge what they say. This would help them feel validated and help children to navigate through their anxiety and fear. Have them pack their bag, arrange a sleep schedule and talk through them about what the child can expect.

Parents may fear that their child could be overwhelmed with subjects taught at school. This can be solved by sending their children to enrichment classes to further help them with their learning foundation. Eye Level Malaysia offers math and English lessons with 1-on-1 coaching and a seamless learning environment, as well as encourages self-directed learning.
