In a Chinese Dictionary, words may also be indexed according to Chinese Radicals
This post is for the members of our Facebook Group - The Malaysia Primary School Parents especially for non-Chinese speaking families who are helping their kids with Chinese homework.
Learning Chinese is very different from learning English or Bahasa Malaysia. In BM or English, you first learn alphabets, then you form words from those alphabets. Learning those alphabets is the building blocks for forming many words and from there you progress on to sentences.
On the other hand, you have to memorize Chinese Mandarin characters in order to master the language. How many Chinese characters are there? Over 50000 according to this article from BBC. However, you only need to know about 2000-3000 in order to read the Chinese newspaper.
Where alphabets are the building blocks for words, perhaps you could say that Chinese Radicals are the building blocks for Chinese characters. So, it would help for you to teach your child this well. Here are some useful resources from the internet that will help you learn Chinese Radicals.
Chinese Character Radicals From Arch Chinese - Click on the pinyin to hear the pronunciation for each radical. Click on the radical and fetch details from the radical page to see the meaning as well as examples of words using the radical and their meanings.
Chinese Characters and Radicals Index - This page has an explanation of how to learn Chinese characters and what are the advantages of learning Chinese Radicals
Learning Chinese Radicals is a lot of fun. Once you learn the radicals, you will understand how and why certain Chinese characters are formed and be able to recognize a lot of other words/Chinese Character or guess the word simply by knowing the radicals. Here is a very good visual example of how the "ice" radical is used to form Chinese characters while here is another one which shows how the "mouth" radical is used in Chinese Characters . (Visit this link to have a good understanding of how radical works). Happy Learning!

Today marks the start of the Ramadhan month for muslims. For those who love art and crafts, it is also a good time to get your kids to do some Ramadhan inspired art. Here is one very easy one for both adults and kids alike. It is based on zentangle art principles.
Zentangle is simply drawing structured repetitive patterns, lines, circles, squares, triangles. You draw the lines onto squares little by little and the end result is always beautiful.
For older kids and adults, you can start off by drawing the outline of a mosque. Zentangle uses squares but we're going to use the outline of an object to create our Ramadhan art. Fill the mosque with zentangle patterns and you get beautiful art. Below is an example of one we did in 15 minutes.
For younger kids, you can get them to draw a prayer mat and fill it with patterns. Other simple basic outline drawing which adults can draw for kids to colour include oil lamps, star and crescent moon, or letters of the alphabet spelling out Ramadhan etc.
Usually only one colour is used but go ahead and make it colourful if you like. At the end of our images, we share a YouTube video on some simple zentangle patterns for kids which you can use for your Ramadhan Art For Kids.
I saw someone make origami dresses previously and they look absolutely adorable. I think these little origami dresses make excellent bookmarks or as gifts to friends. They can also be attached at the top of your wrapper giving your present that extra edge.
They are so easy to make, they make an excellent school holiday activity or craft you can do with your kids at home. No mess and it only takes a couple of minutes.
The above origami dress was crafted after watching the videos on YouTube on How To Make An Origami Dress below. There are two videos below. I find the second one easier to understand but I'm including both. You check both of them out to see which one works better for you. Enjoy folding!
I'm so going to make a few more of these! You can get cute origami paper like these from Daiso.

Last year in November, Hobby Hob In, Bangsar conducted a holiday program for kids called the Picasso Cubist Portraits. Cubism involves drawing made up of geometric shapes, like cubes, spheres, cylinders, cones etc.
Kids can have fun with cubism by drawing and painting brightly coloured portraits. Encourage the use of contrasting colours and lots of geometric shapes to get the cubism effect.
Here are some examples of the Picasso Cubist Portraits created by kids during the holiday program. They are reproduced here with the permission of Hobby Hop In to help you visualize how to create the same kind of art with your kids.
Instructions. Start by drawing the shape for the face and divide it to show a profile. Draw in the features and add free form flowing hair in Picasso's signature style. Finally outline with sharpies and colour in using paint or oil pastels. The results are amazing as you can see.
Hobby Hob In is in Bangsar. Besides art and crafts, they also conduct speech and drama, phonics classes etc. Their creative writing classes for kids is on every Saturday 9-11 am for age 8 and 9 and 11-1 pm for age 10 and 11. This year 2016, Chinese New Year begins on 8th February 2016. I mentioned "begins" instead of "falls on" because the Chinese New Year celebration is really 15 days long culminating in the Chap Goh Meh (which stands for "the fifteenth night") celebration. In between, there are a couple of important days to celebrate too. You can read all about the days of festivities during Chinese New Year from wikipedia.
This year 2016, is the Year of the Monkey according to the Chinese Zodiac. I have two monkeys in my house, my father and my son. The Chinese Zodiac goes on a 12 year cycle so they are about 7 cycles apart. Amazing, now that I come to think of it. You can secretly tell a person's age by asking for their animal sign according to Chinese Zodiac.
The Chinese like red and orange (which sounds like "gold") so I'm going to use red and orange/gold for my Year of the Monkey Chinese New Year 2016 craft for kids.
This is a very simple craft. You can do it in minutes. I gathered all the craft materials from leftover stuff in my house. I always keep knick knacks so we can craft anytime. We used to be able to do crafting a lot when the kids were very much younger but now that they are grown and in school, we have a lot less time for it.
Here's what you will need:
Construction Paper (preferably red, orange, gold)
Sharpie
Stamp Pad
Glue
Hole Puncher
Ribbon
Notes: We used leftover Chinese calligraphy paper from previous years for our craft. They are long and come with pre printed design making it excellent for Chinese New Year Crafts. We used thin red ribbon with a gold trim. If you don't have red paper. You can use white or other colours and use a red stamp pad instead. Stamping on different coloured paper may produce different results as you can see. Our purple stamp looks nice on white paper but looks almost black on the red one.
Chinese New Year Craft For Kids Materials
Instructions for our Chinese New Year 2016 Year of the Monkey Craft For Kids:
We're making a See No Evil, Hear No Evil, Speak No Evil fingerprint Monkey trio bookmark. You can use the same idea to make Chinese New Year homemade cards instead of a bookmark.
Gather all the materials you will need
Cut the paper into two rectangles. The red rectangular paper should be slightly smaller than the orange one
Cut the ribbon into size
Punch a hole at the top of the orange paper
Tie in the ribbon
Practice making fingerprint monkeys on another piece of paper. Use your little finger for the head and your thumb for the body. Then draw in the ears, tail and hands. The first pair of hands goes over the eye area, the second goes over the ears and the third to cover the mouth area
Once you are happy with your fingerprint monkeys, do the same on the red paper
Glue the red paper over the orange one
Write a Chinese New Year message at the bottom area of the bookmark
Happy Chinese New Year 2016!

The Chinese like to give out Angpows (red packets filled with money) during festivities especially Chinese New Year. They like the color red because it symbolizes good luck and fish because the word fish sounds like the word prosperity. So, many Chinese like to decorate their homes with fish made from angpow papers plus lanterns and other decorations all made out of angpow paper. Origami Paper Fortune Tellers Or Cootie Catcher is a traditional game passed down from generation to generation. If you have forgotten how to make one, this post shows you the steps on how to make it.
How To Make A Paper Fortune Teller or Cootie Catcher - Step By Step Instructions
A Paper Fortune Teller or Cootie Catcher is a fun game I used to play as a child. In those days, we didn't have tablet computers or interactive hand held devices to distract us. I like how life was so much simpler then. Children played with homemade games and toys. They read a lot more books then they do now and they also have a lot more physical play.
In this lens, I will teach you how to make a paper fortune teller and how to play with a paper fortune teller. It is a nice game to play with friends on a rainy day. You can make up the fortune or write fun things to do in your paper fortune teller and have a jolly good time.
What You Need To Make Your Paper Fortune Teller - You Will Need A Square Piece Of Paper
First of all, here is what you will need to make your paper fortune teller.
You will need a square piece of paper. You will also need marker pens or colored pens. If you like you can make your paper fortune teller look even better by decorating it with colored pencils, glitters or stickers or anything else you like!
Step One on How To Make Your Own Paper Fortune Teller
First, you have to fold your square paper in half. Then fold it again into half. Finally unfold.
Step Two on How To Fold Your Own Paper Fortune Teller
In the second step, you have to fold all the corners of the paper to meet in the center. When you are done, you will have a square paper again.
Step Three On How To Fold Your Own Paper Fortune Teller - Look at the sequence of this picture in clockwise manner and finishing at the center
When you are done with step two above, turn your paper over.
In step three, you have to fold all the corners of the paper into the center in the same manner as you did in step two.
When you are done, you are back to square one, meaning you will have a square paper again.
Step Four On How To Make Your Own Paper Fortune Teller
When you are done with step three, turn the paper over, then fold first one way and reopen and then fold the other way and reopen. This is to facilitate or make it easier for you to slip your fingers into the paper fortune teller in the next step.
Step Five One How To Make Your Own Paper Fortune Teller
Write the names of four colors on each of the flaps in your paper fortune teller.
The most basic is to write in the name of colors. However, you can exercise your own creativity by filling it with the name of flowers, your friends, or monster names if you prefer, just for fun!
Step Six On How To Make Your Own Paper Fortune Teller
Next, turn the paper fortune teller and write in the numbers 1 to 8 on all of the sections you see.
Again, instead of numbers you can write in any other words you prefer.
Step Seven Of Making Your Own Paper Fortune Teller
Finally, write in the "fortunes". Be imaginative and fun. Write in anything you like.
Instead of 'fortunes' you can also write in other things that require your friends to do a certain action, like "Dance and twirl around" or "Laugh non stop" etc.
How To Play With Your Paper Fortune Teller
1. Slip your fingers into the 'pockets' of the paper fortune teller. 2. Ask your friend to choose a color.
