Transitioning from a primary school to an international school

Selecting the right secondary school for your child is just as important as choosing their primary school and requires some thought and research. Some parents are also thinking about transitioning from public primary school to international secondary school and have many questions about the process.

Previously we could visit schools to do our research but it is not possible to do so now during the covid-19 pandemic. Fret not because now we can attend zoom meetings to ask our questions and share thoughts with other parents and academicians. Here is an upcoming zoom meeting organized by Sri KDU (Klang) on how to select the best secondary school for your child. You can attend it from the comfort of your home.

Below are the details.

Zoom Meeting Date/Time: 26 June, 2021 (Saturday) from 10.30am to 12.00pm

Keeping Your Child Safe Online

Guest post by Geoff Taylor, the Head of Young Learners at the British Council in Malaysia

Under the MCO, Malaysian children are spending more time online. This is generally for good reasons  such as attending distance learning classes or virtual playdates with friends. We are all scrolling through social media or browsing the internet more and this is fine. However, children may not be aware of the dangers of spending time online. The British Council categorizes digital risks in three ways:

1. Content risk:
While the internet is an incredibly useful tool, we all know that there are many sites that we do not want children to visit. Whether it is violence or explicit content, hate speech or self-harm, there is plenty that we do not want our children to see.

2. Conduct risk:
It is unfortunate that when some people are online, they forget how to behave. Bullying, harassment and other upsetting behaviours are surprisingly common, and again, we do not want our children to suffer from these things.

3. Contact risk:
Some people have bad intentions toward children. The internet provides them with an anonymous way to meet and befriend kids. It is a sad fact that global lockdowns have seen an increase in the activities of online predators in every country.

So, what can we do to keep our children safe online? There are a few simple steps to increase our peace of mind:

-  Keep the laptop or iPad in common areas where everyone can easily see what is going on. Avoid  younger kids using computers or electronic devices alone in their bedrooms.

- Ensure your kids know how to find their favourite sites easily so they don’t stumble across  inappropriate content. Bookmarking these sites will help.

- Set all parental controls and other safety features to the strictest settings. If you do not now how to do this, it is simple to Google the procedure.

- Check the browser history if you are concerned about your child’s online activity. A friend of mine  recently noticed that her 8-year-old daughter had spent a very pleasant day watching YouTube videos when she should have been attending her school’s distance learning and extra tuition classes.

The most effective thing we can do is to talk to our children about online safety and explain why it is  important. If we can negotiate some family rules this will help us. Aim for something like this:

- Never respond to a post, message, email etc. that is not nice.

- Don’t use your full name as your screen name.

- Never reveal any personal information, such as your address, phone number or even the school you  attend. Never post any personal pictures and do not trade pictures with someone you meet online.

- Never share passwords, except with your parents.

While we should trust our children and we do not want to ‘over police’ them, warning signs such as your child quickly shutting down the computer or trying to hide what they are doing when you walk into the room could suggest something is wrong. Likewise, if your child is suddenly reluctant to talk about what they have been up to online it may indicate a problem.

At the British Council we take online safety very seriously. We have measures in place to protect the  security of our online classes and regularly teach children about staying safe online. While distance  learning may never be popular with some parents, with some awareness of the dangers and a few  simple precautionary measures in place, we can be sure they will not come to harm while sitting at  the kitchen table taking an English class.

6 Reasons Why You Should Have a Computer Monitor ScreenBar instead of a Desk Lamp

What Is a Computer Monitor ScreenBar?

For the purpose of this article, let's take a look at the BenQ LED e-Reading Monitor Light / ScreenBar.

The BenQ Monitor ScreenBar is an eReading light bar which rests directly on your desktop computer for illumination therefore eliminating the need for a desk lamp.

Here are the top 7 reasons why you should have a monitor light bar instead of a desk lamp

1. Space Saving and Unobtrusive

The e-Reading Monitor Light or ScreenBar is space saving and unobtrusive as it can be attached to any monitor. You do not have to worry about a lamp base fighting for space on your already cluttered desk filled with your mouse, speakers, keyboards and more. No gooseneck or mechanical arms getting in the way. BenQ's Monitor ScreenBar has a patented clip design which instantly attaches to any monitor without the need for any tape or screws that may damage your computer. Webcams can easily be attached on top of the monitor light.

2. Anti Glare and No Reflection

The Monitor ScreenBar is glare free. This is due to the asymmetrical optical design that illuminates your desk without shining on your screen, which ensures zero reflective glare off your monitor screen. In addition to this, the LED light does not flicker and is free of blue light hazard. In contrast, you will have a challenging time trying to angle your traditional desk lamp to ensure that there is no glare.

3. Smart Lamp with Auto Dimming

The ScreenBar e-Reading lamp is equipped with a sensor that detects the surrounding brightness and automatically adjusts the brightness of the light to just the correct level for eye comfort. You do not have to continually adjust the brightness of your computer screen which can emit uncomfortable
strong contrasts of lights. Monitor light bars can brighten your and focus on your workspace without boosting the brightness of the screen, which can be taxing on your eyes.

4. Hue Adjustment

The type of light you need is different when reading an e-book or when looking at a heavily animated site with lots of graphics. The BenQ Screenbar Light comes with ambient lighting adjustment 2700K warm light and 6500K Cool Light . Cool light for concentration or warm light for relaxation. You can adjust it at the tap of a button.

5. Conveniently USB powered

No extra wiring required as the lamp is powered by USB which you can plug into your monitor, CPU, phone charger or power bank.

6. It's portable

As the screenbar is easy to install and portable, you can move it from computer to computer easily, for the kids to do their online lessons or dad and mom to work from home.

With the Ministry of Education's recent announcement of extended home-based learning until the end of the mid term in July, and more parents working from home, it is timely to invest in a good Monitor Light / ScreenBar to protect your eyes with proper lighting designed to relief eye strain from insufficient or too much lighting.
