CEFR Parallel Assessments in PT3, UPSR and SPM

Last year (2019), PT3 students received grading on their English language proficiency using CEFR standards. Many parents were confused because they did not know about the adoption of CEFR in Malaysia. They also did not understand the grading under CEFR.

What is CEFR and Adoption of CEFR in Malaysia

CEFR is the Common European Framework for Languages. It is an international standard for describing language ability and is used in many countries. CEFR is widely accepted by many countries as an international framework for language teaching, learning and assessment.

Malaysia adopted CEFR under the Malaysia Education Blueprint (2013 - 2025) and Roadmap for English Language Education Reform (2015 - 2025).

With a common framework ie the CEFR,  teachers or learners, employers and educational institutions can see and compare the level of English qualifications of one learner with another. A learner who receives the same grade under the CEFR is similarly qualified irrespective of which school or country they are from.

Implementation of CEFR- aligned curriculum for Malaysian schools
The CEFR-aligned curriculum for both SK and SJK is implemented in stages, beginning with Years l and 2 in 2018. Under this new curriculum, Listening and Speaking are treated as separate skills instead of combined as in the past, and all five language skills (Listening, Speaking, Reading, Writing and Language Arts) are developed based on the CEFR. Phonics is covered separately.

The CEFR-aligned curriculum for Malaysian secondary schools is implemented in stages, beginning with Forms 1 and 2 in 2018. Under this new curriculum, Listening and Speaking are treated as separate skills instead of combined as in the past, and all four language skills (Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing) are developed based on the CEFR proficiency levels. Grammar (taught in Language Awareness lessons) and vocabulary are integrated in lessons focusing on the four skills as well as Literature in Action.

CEFR Grading

CEFR describes language ability on a six point scale, from A1 for beginners up to C2 for those who have mastered the language.

Levels:
Pre-A1, A1, A2 = Basic User
B1, B2 = Independent User
C1, C2 = Proficient User

Go to this link to view the CEFR Global Scale with details of each level and what it means.

Parallel Assessments in PT3, UPSR and SPM

The first parallel assessment of Common European Framework of Reference For Language (CEFR) was implemented at the Form Three Assessment (PT3) examination level for the English Language paper in 2019. (Note that students need not sit for an extra exam paper. They are merely assessed twice for the same English paper they sat for.)

Parallel assessment of the English Language paper would be implemented for the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) in 2021 and Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) in 2022.

"Although the highest grade was C2, equivalent to the proficiency of an English native speaker, PT3 questions were set at B1 level. SPM, would start with the new CEFR format in 2021 with the hope that students would have acquired at least the B1 level. UPSR would follow suit in 2022 with A2 set as the highest grade."  (Ref: First CEFR assessment via PT3 english paper)

Using CEFR aligned books

Parents and educators should use CEFR aligned books as teaching material to guide students and prepare them for their examinations. When buying specific English Language Teaching books, parents and teachers should look out for “CEFR-aligned curriculum”.

This post was brought to you by Oxford Fajar Malaysia. Oxford Fajar has a range of ELT (English Language Teaching) books that are CEFR aligned. Oxford Fajar is a subsidiary of Oxford University Press, the world's leading authority on the English Language. Every year more than 33 million students use Oxford materials to learn English.

Just Enough is written and illustrated by Allie Hill
Title: Just Enough
Writer and Illustrator: Allie Hill
No of pages: 36 pages
For Whom: Toddlers and Preschoolers (Age 4-7)
Published Date: 15 December 2016
Publisher: MPH Group Publishing

The beautiful illustrations and harmony of colours are the first thing that draws you to this book for preschoolers. When it comes to children's books, I love those that have beautiful illustration, rhyming words and a moral lesson. This book has them all.

Just Enough by Allie Hill is a feel good book about love, good times, good memories and family. The illustrations are eye-catching and pleasing even for adults who may be reading this together with their little ones.

Written in prose form, the book journeys through time as seen through the eyes of a little girl with her favourite blanky made with love by grandma for her to the time when she is all  grown up. Though the blanky is now reduced to a hanky it remains in her heart forever more.

The girl has exciting adventures with her blanket and takes away with her a lifetime of skills and lessons from her grandmother.

An easy and fun read with words that rhyme and lots of pretty pictures with important lessons about love and family for little ones. That is what you can expect from this 36 page storybook for toddlers and preschoolers.

An Evening With Harry Potter

Yesterday we got to spend the evening with Harry Potter, not just one Harry Potter but two of them!

Image Credit: Potted Potter dot com

Thanks to Milestone Production which sponsored giveaway contest tickets to our members, some of our members got to enjoy the Potted Potter show that played to full houses from 2 June to 5 June 2016.

The show was held at The Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre.

The Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre is in Sentul Park, a lovely green lung in the city.

You will see an interesting blend of modern architecture set against preserved buildings, in with the new but not out with the old. We keep the old for without the old, there would be no new.

While waiting you can have a snack with your friends. Be prepared to pay though.

Lots of signs to the show greeting visitors so you won't get lost. It is easy to find the venue.

It was a full house yesterday. It was still early at the time this picture was taken. Those seats were all filled up later on. Do you see the  Hogwarts Express toHogwarts from Platform 9¾ in the picture? That promised a lot of fun and laughter and that was what we got. The actors were a riot and everyone had a jolly good time. The audience even managed to participate in a life game of  Quidditch as promised. Cool!

Thanks to Milestones Productions for upgrading all our winners tickets, we all got a great view. Hope to catch more shows like this one in the future.

If you are interested in finding out more about the courses being offered by British Council Malaysia now is your chance to get more information. Registration starts now, learn more about the courses here.

British Council Kuala Lumpur and Damansara are having open days on 5, 6, 12, 13, 19 and 20 December 2015.

Lots of activities have been planned for the open days. You can attend free parents workshops while your children have fun participating in arts and crafts, hand and face painting, treasure hunts and story telling activities. There will be free goodie bags and gifts to be won. So why not treat it like a little holiday excursion with your children while you find out more about the English Language courses, the fees, timetable and more.

Speak to the teachers about the syllabus and have a good look around to visualize whether your child will enjoy the learning environment. This is always a good idea whenever you send your children to any learning centre. It is important to pay the centre a visit to understand the learning culture and conditions.

The open days will be over 6 different dates to fit your schedule so you can drop by on the day most convenient to you.

This open day is held simultaneously on both British Council Branches in the Klang Valley ie. the Mutiara Damansara and Kuala Lumpur branches.

Here's a sneak peek of the new course. In Primary Plus, kids will be doing a variety of tasks and projects that are aimed at improving their understanding and use of the English language. Besides learning English, the plus factors are the essential living skills of communicating, working with others, problem solving, decision making, leadership, creativity and higher order thinking skills that they will learn in the context of the English lessons. It is like a two-in-one course. This is an excellent course for those seeking for something more than just academics.

Parents with kids in SJKC or SK should find the course useful to help their children advance in English as well as think out of the box. Free Printable Reward Chart For Kids

Free Printable Reward Chart For Kids
Free Printable Reward Chart For Kids
These days I find myself engrossed with creating graphics. I am so in love with my Microsoft Publisher which is installed on my PC. I also like Pic Monkey for online work and the various drawing and photo and picture apps I have installed on my iPad. Now I'm addicted to both writing and designing. I wish I could draw a little bit better but I am working on it. If only I have a little bit more time to practice.

Anyway, here is my latest creation. This one is a free printable reward chart for kids. You can use these reward chart to reward children for all sorts of things from staying dry during toilet training to good behavior or for helping with chores around the house. I've used these reward charts for a long time and my kids remember them with fondness.

Just the other day, we took out some congratulatory cards while we were spring cleaning and they both exclaimed "Mum, you used to make us those cards when we ran out of cards for those reward stars you used to give us." Yes, we had cut out paper cards and decorated them with stickers and given each to a child whenever they completed a set of stars as a credit card to guarantee that mum remembers to actually reward them with something. Usually it is a small stationery or something useful which they crave.

How the kids love the reward charts especially my boy. I think it works differently with different kids.

The best tip I can give you about using reward charts is this. Don't overdo it or it will lose its purpose. We've fallen into that trap before. That's when I will remove the reward chart and stars and get back to them again later.

Here is my Free Printable Reward Chart For Kids. I included stars in it so you can color in the stars for each day or if you prefer, you can add a big tick over the stars when a goal is achieved for the day. You can use this reward chart for anything that you want your child to work on so they understand the meaning of having and achieving goals.  Stick it on the wall near your child's work or play area. You can print as many as you like for each month. The file is in pdf format.

You can start with small goals and work up to more. You can give them special credit cards like I did or real paper origami stars to keep. If you are interested in giving them real origami stars, you can read my old post on How to Make Origami Stars And Reward Your Kids With Real Stars. Once they receive a certain predetermined amount, then you can reward them with a small gift or token. However, you must be very clear with your rules and you must stick to it. No bargaining allowed!

I'm really enjoying making these free printable calendar for kids. For today, I have done two calendars for kids for the month of December 2014. If you have a design you have in mind for your child, feel free to drop your design idea in the comments box as well as a contact and I will see if I can come up with a personalized design for you or if you would like to have your child's name on it for example, feel free to write to me. It won't be hard for me to include it in my Snowman or other design calendar for children. No charge. It is free but only if I can find the time to make them.

Free Printable November 2014 Calendar For Kids - Thanksgiving Theme

In continuing with my free printable monthly calendar for kids, here's one I created for the month of November 2014.

This Nov 2014 calendar for children is in a Thanksgiving theme. Thanksgiving Day in United States is on the fourth thursday of November. This means it is on Thursday, Nov 27 in the year 2014.

A Thanksgiving theme calendar is a very nice way to get kids to do a countdown to Thanksgiving Day. So print out this calendar for children, paste it at their play areas or work desks and have them countdown the days to Thanksgiving by crossing out the dates from Nov 1 till Nov 27.

As before, I used Microsoft Publisher and the clipart that comes along with it to create the calendar.

Here is the download link for the Free Printable November 2014 Calendar For Kids.

Free Printable 2015 Calendar For Kids

Free Printable Calendar For Kids 2015
Free Printable Calendar For Kids 2015
Since I am in the mood for creating free printable stuff for my blog, I decided to move it along and make a few free printable 2015 calendar for kids, both boys and girls.

They are  full year 2015 calendar. I have not included any holidays in it as my blog readers come from all over the world, mainly the US but also India, Russia, Australia, France, Philippines, United Kingdom, Germany, China, Singapore, Malaysia and more. So after thinking about it, I decided not to include any holidays so that everyone can use the free 2015 Kids Calendar.

Teaching kids how to use a calendar is a good way to teach them about the passage of time. It will help to teach younger kids about the days of the week. For older kids, it will help teach them to be more organized as you circle or tick off important dates like school trips, project due dates etc.

I created the 2015 Calendars in 3 designs. The first one is a bright yellow calendar so that it is nice and cheery for kids rooms. The top shows clip arts of children working and playing, something that every child should be doing all year round. Work hard and play hard. The clip arts are from Microsoft Publisher 2010.

You can download the yellow Free Printable 2015 Calendar For Kids here. It is in pdf format.

Enjoy! If you like this page, please pin it. Thank you.

Here is another kids timetable for the  year 2015 which I created. It is in purple with a picture of a child standing on a pile of books. There are pencils beside the word 2015. As before, the clipart is from Microsoft Publisher. You can download the Purple Free Kids Calendar For 2015 from here. This one would be suitable or nice for a boy.

Since I did one for the boys, I decided to take it one step further and make a free printable 2015 calendar for girls, the princesses in your life. So here's one, in sweet pink and pastel yellow with a crown fit for a princess and a princess on the calendar in my attempt to create a princess theme Calendar for girls.

Free Printable October 2014 Calendar For Kids - Deepavali or Diwali Theme

Recently I downloaded the Sketchbook Pro for free. I've been trying to learn how to use it to improve on my digital drawings. Drawing digitally is another thing all together. Learning how to draw and paint with your fingers is like going back to kindergarten to learn art all over again. Since I have no chance to attend a digital drawing class, I had to learn on my own with the internet as a guide. It took me a whole afternoon trying to figure out how to draw and color with layers. I am not quite sure I  have got it yet.

Anyway, I managed to draw a little Indian girl in a saree for my first try in sketching with my Sketchbook pro. I put my sketch in my Free Printable October 2014 Calendar For Kids for the Deepavali or Diwali Theme.

I wanted to put in a clip art on the Deepavali or Diwali date just like I did for my Halloween Theme October 2014 Calendar for kids, however there appears to be a little confusion over the Deepavali dates for 2014. Is Deepavali 2014 on Oct 22 or Oct 23? A search on Google will show you that Deepavali or Diwali falls on 23 October, 2014. However, some countries like Singapore and Malaysia will be celebrating Deepavali on 22 October, 2014. Since there is a confusion, I decided to play it safe and not include the icon or clip art on the date itself.

You can print out this Free Printable October 2014 Calendar for your child to use as a planner. After all, the year end exams are approaching for some children. It will be a good way for you to teach them how to keep track of their revision for their final exams.

Here is the download link for the Deepavali Themed October 2014 Calendar For Kids. The file is in pdf format. If you have trouble printing directly from the print button, try using the (Print Using System Dialog or Control + Shift + P) Option.

I also created a Free Printable 2015 Calendar For Kids. You can download it from the link.

I've always enjoyed making cards, posters and calendars using all kinds of computer software and apps. However, it has never occurred to me to make a free printable to give away on my blog before. I guess there is always a first time for everything. I decided to make a free printable calendar for kids. Since it is coming to the last quarter of the year, it would not be practical to make a yearly calendar. A monthly calendar would be more appropriate. Since it is the end of September, I decided to make a free printable calendar for kids for the month of October 2014 incorporating a Halloween Design for kids to giveaway on my blog.

I used Microsoft Publisher to create this calendar. The Halloween Witch Cartoon on the October 2014 Calendar was hand drawn or rather finger drawn by me using my iPad and a drawing app. The iPad is a fantastic drawing tool.

Anyway, here it is. This is my very first free printable that I am giving away on my blog. It only took me minutes to do since I have got the graphics from the Halloween Greeting Card which I did for my blog last year. This is so much fun. I will definitely think of offering more free printables in the future. I hope you enjoy this one.
