Travelling with the kids

We will be travelling long distance in a car with the kids soon. I'm now busy thinking of a plan to entertain them during the journey. I remember the last time we set off on a journey. We left very early, at about 5am in the morning. Took them out in their pyjamas and they continued sleeping in the car.

The car was cool at this time of the day and it was still dark. The driving motion helped them sleep. By the time they woke up, we were half way to our destination. So we stopped for a meal. After that they were wide awake. So we sang songs, counted cars, trees, looked at car number plates and colours and ate. Yes, food is a good form of entertainment in the car for this lazy mama.

How do you entertain your kids on a long journey? I will be happy to receive more tips from experienced parent travellers.

  1. what we always do is travel early in the morning so the kids will be sleeping through the juorney, or at least most of it. If we have to travel in the afternoon, we make sure they have lots of stuff to do like games and music.

Anyway i suppose next year onwards it'll get easier as they are bigger now...

  2. errr...how long is your long journey? Mine the longest car journey is 2 1/2 hours, usually the car movement will make them drowsy..so I dont really have headache entertaining my kids. They need their "bantal busuk", my girl needs her milk and also some snacks. We have some kids CD and board books (but hardly use) , what we does is we chat and sing silly along the journey until they tired and zzzz. For plane ride (budget airline got no free toys one) and bus ride...I didn't even prepare books or CD and we survived. :D

  3. simon,
Yes, asleep is best. No need entertainment. Lol!

    dragonmummy,
It's a little bit longer than 2 1/2 hours I'm afraid with the holiday jams. :(

  6. Usually, like you, mumsgather and simon, we travel early, carry them out while they're still in their PJs and let them continue sleeping in the car. But if we are traveling when they are awake, it's games like I spy, and recently we treated it like a race, "Are we number 4 on the road? Are we following that truck?"
Sometimes, when there are no other cars but us, the kids think we are leading the race and they do this cute hit butt dance. And they cheer for their daddy or atuk or whoever's driving.
Food and snacks help and kid's music help too. The latter sometimes make s them drowsy again LOL. Mika will usually bring his cars and inez, her bears or those free dolls from Happy Meal. Sometimes they sing silly song at the back. They're getting bigger, I guess.
