How to Turn Your Child into a Consistent Learner During the School Year

At the beginning of a new school year, most children are excited, curious, and motivated to learn. However, as the weeks go by, that enthusiasm can fade. Some children may begin to doubt their abilities, lose interest in their studies, or feel overwhelmed. As parents, it's important to recognize these changes and help our children maintain a steady, balanced approach to learning, without burning out.

The Key: Building Consistency in Learning

While motivation and curiosity are excellent starting points, developing consistency is what sustains a child’s learning over the long term. It’s normal for motivation to fluctuate, and sometimes external factors contribute to a child’s lack of interest or energy. Parents should be mindful of the challenges children may face in school, such as:

● Repetitive or unengaging tasks

● Bullying or peer pressure

● Excessive homework load

● Difficulty focusing in class

These factors can significantly impact a child’s ability to stay motivated. That’s why building a routine of consistent, manageable learning habits is crucial—and it doesn’t happen overnight. It starts with small, supportive steps.

Practical Strategies to Foster Consistent Learning Habits

1. Break Study Time Into Manageable Chunks

Encourage short, focused study sessions—ideally 20 to 30 minutes long—followed by short breaks. This method helps children absorb information more effectively and avoids mental fatigue. Incorporate fun activities or practice tests to make learning interactive and strengthen memory recall.

2. Connect Learning to Real-Life Relevance

Help your child see the value in what they’re learning. For example, relate math lessons to budgeting or shopping to make the concepts more tangible. Understanding why they’re learning something can boost engagement and deepen understanding.

3. Cater to Their Learning Style

Every child learns differently. Some are visual learners, while others learn best through hands-on activities or auditory cues. Identify your child’s learning style and tailor study activities to suit them. This personalized approach makes learning more enjoyable and effective.

4. Be Involved and Model a Growth Mindset

Take an active interest in your child’s education. Ask them about what they’re learning, listen attentively, and show enthusiasm. Celebrate effort rather than just results—this fosters a growth mindset, where children value progress and learning over perfection or grades.

New Safety Measures for School Vans in Johor After Tragic Incident

Following the tragic death of a five-year-old boy left in a school van, Johor has implemented stringent new safety measures for school vans transporting 10 or more children.

Johor education and information committee chairman Aznan Tamin announced a new Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) with several key components designed to enhance child safety:

  • Driver's Assistant Mandate: Requires a driver's assistant to ensure child safety during pick-up and drop-off.
  • Vehicle Checks: Mandates thorough checks of the van before locking, at both school and home.
  • Alarm Systems: Some vans are equipped with alarms to alert if a child is left behind.
  • Attendance Tracking: Requires recording attendance upon entry and exit, with immediate notification of any issues.
  • Driver Requirements: Includes mandatory special safety training and health assessments for drivers.
  • Emergency Response Protocols: Outlines procedures for emergencies, urging schools and parents to develop their own.
  • Incident Reporting: Encourages schools to report safety incidents to the authorities.
  • Scope: Applies to all educational institutions in Johor.
  • Formulation & Enforcement: Developed by the Education Department and the Land Public Transport Agency, with implementation and enforcement underway.

This comprehensive SOP aims to prevent similar tragedies and underscores the shared responsibility of schools, van operators, and parents in ensuring the safety and welfare of schoolchildren.

Heads Up, KL & Selangor! ASEAN Summit Means Temporary Home-Based Learning for Some Schools

Big news for students, parents, and teachers in certain parts of Kuala Lumpur and Selangor! The Ministry of Education (KPM) has just announced that 71 schools in these areas will be implementing home-based teaching and learning (PdPR) from May 26th to May 28th, 2025.

This temporary shift is happening in conjunction with the 46th ASEAN Summit, which will lead to various road closures and heightened security measures. KPM's decision to allow PdPR for these schools is a smart move to ensure that student learning isn't disrupted by the logistical challenges of the summit. It's all about making sure education continues smoothly, even with major events happening in the city.

If your child attends one of the affected schools, or if you're a teacher or school staff member, you'll want to stay tuned to your respective school's official communication channels. That's where you'll get all the detailed information about how PdPR will be carried out for these three days.

So, get ready to adjust your routines slightly and embrace the flexibility of learning from home for a few days. It's a small change that helps keep things running smoothly for everyone!
