Cooking With Kids - Making Fried Wantons

The kids love to help around the house. They especially love to help in the kitchen. Recently, I made fried wantons and got my two little helpers to help out. They enjoyed it very much. They love putting the filling into  the wanton wrappers, then 'gluing' them up with the egg white 'glue' and arranging them out on the plate like a flower. It is rather like playing, only better. They get to eat up the 'toy' afterwards.

Cooking With Kids - Making Fried Wantons

Here is my girl laying out the finished wanton on a plate

All the wantons are neatly arranged onto the plates by the kids. They each had a plate but fought over the skins, the fillings etc.

Into the frying pan goes the wanton.

So many wantons for so few of us but we managed to clean out both the plates.

We used store bought wanton skins. As for the filling, we used minced chicken and chopped carrots. That was all the ingredients we had in the house at the time. Mummy forgot to add salt to the filling, so everyone had to eat the wantons with some sauce for taste.

Cooking with kids is a fun activity. We can only do this during the school holidays as during school days, the kids schedule are full ...... with homework.

Kids Role Playing

The kids had fun role playing to the max at Kidzania recently. First, they got to don pilot uniforms and use a flight simulator to pretend at being pilots. Then, they got to pretend to be electrical technicians and worked with a team to repair a faulty street lamp.

Then they became investigators to investigate the case of some stolen data from a laptop, they got the clue to key in a computer and when the fingerprint was matched, they found the culprit.

They also joined a city parade and went Christmas caroling with some other kids. They sang "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town" to a guitarist strumming with Santa and an Elf in the parade too.

They also got to become reporters and had to interview a bank staff about how to open a bank account and get an ATM card. They were given a real digital camera to take a photograph of the bank employee too and got to publish their news on a real newspaper and take it home. Oh yes, before they became a journalist, they went to college to study journalism so that they would get paid extra for having a degree.

This was their second trip to Kidzania. Most of the activities they selected were the ones which they get paid a salary, they didn't want to go for those others in which they had to pay to attend an activity. Finally, when they had to leave, they didn't want to buy any souvenirs with their hard earned kidzos. They banked it all in for their next trip.

"Mom, we don't want to buy those silly stuff which cost so much. We want to use it for activities the next time. It is more worth it."

I wish they had places like these when I was a kid. It is so much fun. When my girl heard that, she said they should have a Kidzania for adults too. Now, that would be interesting. I wouldn't mind 'working' in a beauty salon or jewelry shop and I want to try making an ice-cream from an ice-cream machine or making chocolates or yoghurt and...

Dad said they would be bored after one or two more trips when they have tried it all but I don't think so. There are still quite a few other activities they have not tried and they have already expressed the wish to do some of those they have tried once again.

Frugal Living As Parents

Once you start a family and when your family grows, so do your expenses. This starts from the time your children are babies. There are so many things a baby needs, baby food, baby clothing, baby diapers, baby bathtubs, baby cribs, baby strollers, baby chairs just to name a few. None of these things come cheap.

So, how do you practice frugal living as a parent? One way is to try to get free baby stuff. You can get diaper samples, free baby clothing, free baby bottles and more from sponsoring companies. Besides free baby stuff, another way is to shop using coupons. So, make sure you hunt for and shop using coupons. This is another good way to live frugally as parents. In fact, shopping using coupons is useful for everyone, not just parents.

Besides being frugal, sometimes you can get quite useful stuff for your babies like free baby planners, baby growth trackers and others. All of these little things go a long way and will be very useful for bringing up baby.

Quick Tips on How To Live Frugally As A Parent

  • Get free baby stuff
  • Shop using coupons
  • Accept and use hand me downs or second hand stuff
  • Recycle baby stuff for your next baby
Do you have any other frugal living tips as parents you would like to share?

Drawing Up A Will And Testament Online

Drawing up a will and testament can be a really daunting task. So, I am happy to know that like everything else these days, you can now draw up a will and testament online. I love doing things online. It makes life so much more easy and convenient.

I haven't gotten round to drawing a will yet but as parents, I think this is something we all should think about doing. I'm glad that now drawing up a will and testament can be done online. For example, in one online wills service website, all you need to do is to fill up a questionaire, then your relevant documents will be drawn up by a law firm. After that you will receive your texas will and last testament by mail or email followed by instructions on how to sign it. You can draw up a will as an individual and there are couples wills too. I didn't know about that.

Doing things online has not only added convenience to our lives, it also has made what was once a daunting, tedious and difficult process much more easy including difficult paperwork and legal issues like drawing up wills. I love technology! However, one caution when doing things online. Always look for secure sites and those that maintain high levels of security especially if you will be giving away personal information.

Origami Santa Claus Craft For Kids

Christmas is just around the corner. I can hear and see Christmas in the air when I visit the shopping malls filled with Christmas decorations and holiday music. If you are a parent to young kids, now is the time to spend some time with them making some easy Santa Claus crafts for kids. Making crafts together with kids is a special bonding moment that shouldn't be missed. At 8 and 10 years old, my kids have almost outgrown this special time where they want to sit down and do crafts together. I surely miss those early years when we used to do that a lot.

Anyway, here is an easy Santa Claus Craft for kids which I found online. It is an adorable origami Santa Claus Craft. It is easy enough for kids to do but adults may enjoy it too so you will have fun making it for your kids.

Origami Santa Claus Craft For Kids

The instructions for this Origami Santa Claus can be found here on the Hoikuakira blog. It is a Japanese blog but don't worry if you can't read Japanese, the blogger has given very clear step by step pictorial instructions on how to make this cute little origami Santa Claus.

You can place this Origami Santa Claus on homemade Christmas cards or use it as a homemade paper Christmas Ornament. You can even add it to a Christmas scene picture and frame it up. Use your creativity and have fun!

If you or someone you know has been asked to be Santa Claus this year, then do check out my Squidoo Lens on How To Be Santa Claus. Otherwise you can hop over here to have a look at what modes of transportation Santa can use apart from his usual reindeer in 10 Fun Inflatable Santa Claus Decorations For Your Yard.

Doctor, Lawyer Or Accountant?

The kids were having a conversation about what they want to be when they grow up. Usually, the girl wants to either write a book or sell something. The boy on the other hand wants to be a builder or the person who sells books, or the one who opens the restaurant. I guess, it must come from the building toys he likes to play with and the restaurants we visit after our weekly trips to the book store. That is why one wants to be an author and the other one wants to be a publisher because he thinks he will make more money selling than writing books.

Neither of them wants to be a doctor, lawyer or accountant though. I guess papa wants them to be a doctor because he says it is good to help others and doctors help others. Mama on the other hand is thinking about all those long hours they will have to be keeping or being kept on their toes from being on call all the time and the depression that may set in from seeing sick people all the time.

Oh dear, perhaps a lawyer or accountant may be a better thing. These days its even easy to get continuing legal education online. West Legal Ed Center is an example of that.

Whatever it is, whatever the children choose to become when they grow up, the most important thing to me is they are happy and healthy.

Artificial Turf Is A Good Idea

I like some greens around my house but all I have are tiles and concrete. Courtesy of the previous owner who removed the turn and tiled up the whole porch area. This is good for parking cars but it makes the house lack character. I place potted green plants around the porch but they are not the same as green grass.

However, one thing that I can't keep up with is the grass cutting. If I have grass in my porch, then I have to trim it. I was thinking that artificial turn is probably a good idea. It'll give the house some green and I don't have to trim, especially now that the maid is gone. With teaching the kids and keeping the house clean, I hardly even have time to water my potted greens on my porch, not to mention having any turf real or artificial.

Unfortunately, we have two cars and only a small space to park them. So I guess, installing artificial turf is just an idea I'll have to shelf for now, not unless I want to install the artificial turn inside the house. That would be nice too but only if I have a big house with an indoor garden, and a pond and a water feature or fountain. Yes, dream on girl, dream on.

Rainbow Magic Fairy Books By Daisy Meadows

Rainbow Magic Sepcial Edition: Magical Holiday Boxed Set

Rainbow Magic Special Edition: Magical Holiday Boxed Set

Recently my girl bought a couple of Rainbow Magic Fairy Books By Daisy Meadows. She bought it because she wanted to collect the charm bracelet and bracelet charms that came with the book! Not exactly a very good reason for buying a book but she insisted that she only bought one of them because she liked the bracelet. "I bought the other one because I like the book mum, not the bracelet." said my Little Miss Bookworm. The book has a charm each to collect and a charm bracelet in one of the 6 books in the set. I guess she will be clamouring for more the next time we visit the book store.

The Rainbow Magic series are easy to read and good for girls who like fairies (and which girl does not?). I don't mind that my girl reads it. Kids Popular Chapter Books are great to encourage reading. I don't even mind that she wants to collect the books for the charm bracelets as long as she reads them, and she does.

My girl is a voracious reader and a classic book worm. She reads whenever she gets a chance to and at any time, there will be about 5-6 books and magazines in English and Chinese being read all at the same time. She reads comics, magazines, books, novels, a wide variety of books.

Anyway, back to the Rainbow Magic Fairy Books By Daisy Meadows, I find this Rainbow Magic Special Edition Holiday Box Set very nice as a Christmas Gift for a girl. It includes 4 holiday titles:

Holly the Christmas Fairy
Stella the Star Fairy
Gabriella the Snow Kingdom Fairy
Paige the Christmas Play Fairy

Is your little girl a fan of Fairy Stories too? If she is, you can introduce her to the Rainbow Magic Fairy Books by Daisy Meadows. Daisy Meadows is a pseudonym used by the writers of Rainbow Magic, who are all hugely talented and successful authors in their own right.

Existing Fans of Rainbow Magic can go here for Rainbow Magic Games And Activities Online.

Stop Smoking Education

I think kids these days are more educated about smoking and the bad effects of smoking. I have seen many kids telling their parents to stop smoking now. There is much more publicity and graphic pictures and they are being taught in school about how smoking is bad for them.

I hope that when the kids reach their late teens and early adulthood, they will remember this early stop smoking education and won't pick up smoking the way some young adults did previously. Smoking is not cool. You do not have to smoke to feel that you belong to a group.

I seriously hope that my children won't be caught up in the peer pressure to smoke later on in life. For now, I am content that they show displeasure when someone smokes or tells me to move away from a smoke filled area in a restaurant because "it is bad to breathe in second hand smoke, mom."

Sometimes they ask me "If smoking is bad for us, why do people smoke, mom?" A very good question indeed. Why do people smoke? I wish they would stop. Then the world around us will be a better, cleaner and fresher place to live it and people will become healthier too. So, if you are a smoker, why not stop smoking today. One day you will be a parent and you won't want your kids to smoke knowing how bad smoking is for them.

Interesting Groomsmen Gifts

I remember my husband had 3 groomsmen for our wedding. We didn't know very much about wedding customs then. We still don't know. For example, we don't know who many groomsmen is too many and how many groomsmen one should have. So, we just settled for 3. 3 who could actually make it for our wedding.

We didn't give the groomsmen any gifts. We just gave them angpows or red packets filled with money. Thinking back, I think we should have given the groomsmen some unique groomsmen gifts. It would have been memorable and fun to shop for them. They would serve as a very nice keepsakes for our wedding and would have been a  very nice touch.

However, at the time, we were so busy running around taking care of the venue for our wedding, taking our wedding photographs, getting our rings, wedding garments etc. There is so much to do for a wedding! I actually lost weight running around organizing our wedding.

We enjoyed all the things we had to do leading to our wedding. I think it is much more fun to do it ourselves rather than to leave it to a wedding organizer. However, next time anyone wants to plan and organize their own wedding, I would advise them not to forget interesting groomsmen gifts like we did.

Christmas Gift Basket For Kids

Christmas Gift Basket For Kids make a very good hostess gift. A Christmas Gift Basket For Kids are also good stocking stuffers for children. These days you can easily get beautiful kids gift baskets online. They can be delivered to the recipient directly or you can arrange for the kids gift baskets to be delivered to your own home as a stocking filler or if you are attending a gathering hosted by another family, it would be a very good hostess gift to give to the hostess of the Christmas party or gathering especially if the family has young kids. They will surely appreciate it for sure.

Here are my top 7 picks for this year's 2012 Christmas Gift Baskets For Kids

Unique Gift for Children: "Creative Kids" Christmas Gift Basket for Kids

Unique Gift for Children: "Creative Kids" Christmas Gift Basket for Kids
I love this one because it is a good combination of goodies, snacks as well as a variety of activities for kids including coloring books, cards, crayons and more. I always prefer kids gift baskets to include crafts and activities and small toys rather than be limited to snacks alone. This Christmas Gift Basket For Kids has both snacks as well as crafts.

Santa Claus Stocking Stuffer Holiday Christmas Gift Basket

Santa Claus Stocking Stuffer Holiday Christmas Gift Basket
I did mention that I prefer kids gift baskets to have a variety of snacks as well as activities for kids like craft kits and more. However, I am including this kids Christmas Gift Basket because the Santa stocking is adorable and can be reused after the snacks are gone. The Santa themed candies are really cute too and the price is not too expensive as compared to some other Christmas Gift Basket For Kids. This one is affordable and makes a nice Christmas Stocking Stuffer for Kids.

Art of Appreciation Gift Baskets Crafty Kids Fun & Activity Gift Box
Art of Appreciation Gift Baskets Crafty Kids Fun & Activity Gift Box
Though not exactly a Christmasy one since it does not have Santa or Reindeer or any of those things you associate with Christmas, I simply love this Gift Basket For Kids because of all the activities within especially craftting acitivity kits for children including crayons, play dough and lots more goodies.

Santa!: Children's Holiday Christmas Gift Basket

Santa!: Children's Holiday Christmas Gift Basket
If you simply must have a Christmas themed one, then Santa will definitely be fitting for Christmas. This Christmas Gift Basket For Kids is filled with Santa themed snacks and candies with a plush Santa watching over all of those delicious cookies and sweets.

Frosty and Friends Christmas Holiday Snowman Gift Basket
Frosty and Friends Christmas Holiday Snowman Gift Basket
Another Christmas Gift Basket For Kids has Frosty The Snowman as the main theme. The holiday candies and chocolates are presented in a lovely wooden box with a snowman trio which can be reused year after year. This makes an excellent gift for a hostess. I wouldn't mind receiving one myself.

Christian Childrens Christmas Gift Basket with Cookies, Chocolate, Fudge, Books & Music

Christian Childrens Christmas Gift Basket with Cookies, Chocolate, Fudge, Books & Music
This Christmas gift basket fulfills my criteria of good gift baskets which must have a variety of snacks as well as other gifts. It includes a Christmas singalong CD for kids, a mini book "Away in a Manger", Christmas bookmark plus yummy holiday chocolates and cookies. I find the blue packaging a nice change from the usual red and green ones.

Merry Chris-Moose - Christmas Holiday Gourmet Food Gift Basket
Merry Chris-Moose - Christmas Holiday Gourmet Food Gift Basket
This Christmas Gift Basket is suitable for a hostess. The moose theme is cute for the kids. There are many treats in the basket. However, it would be good for everyone, not just for children. So if you are looking for a strictly kids Christmas Gift Baskets, the kids may prefer some of the others featured above. This one is more like a Christmas Gift basket for everyone in the house.

Motivation For Reading

One of the best gifts you can give a child is the gift of a lifetime love for reading and for books. It isn't really hard to achieve this. First, you must instill a love for books and an inner motivation for reading in the child. To do this, you have to love books yourself. Read often, to the child, or together. Visit bookshops instead of toy shops. Browse, read and buy books as gifts. The more the child is read to and the more the child sees you reading, the more interested they will be in books. Read daily, every night before sleep or in the afternoon before nap times or wherever and whenever your schedule permits.

Once the Common Core of the love for reading is achieved, you will then have given your child a gift for a lifetime. Books takes us to far away places we can otherwise never go. Books takes us through adventures, we see and learn so much from books. Read together or apart then talk about what you have read.

Read comics, story books, magazines, newspapers. It doesn't matter. Read from traditional paper books, read from the newer tablets or digital format books. As long as you are reading, the format does not matter either. This Christmas, why not give a child a book as a gift? Books are the best gift of all.

My Roof Is Leaking Again

It's the rainy season and my roof is leaking again. Yesterday, I had to take a video so that I can show the contractor that his previous work has not made any difference to my leaking roof. I'm not sure what he will think of it though. Previously after he fixed it, the rainy season coincidentally ended and it was sunny days. So we had not chance to really test it out.

However, its raining daily now and we're back to the drip drip drip situation. Fortunately the leaking roof is in the bathroom where it's meant to be wet anyway. Otherwise I would have to call the contractor in ASAP!

That is one of the problems of buying a used second hand home. You never know what sort of problem awaits you, roofing problems, termite problems and more. This is the 3rd or 4th contractor we've called in for our roofing patch up jobs and so far none of them has been successful.

It's not easy to find a good roofing ottawa company. One tip I'd like to share with housebuyers buying second hand homes. Always look up to check for water stains when viewing the house. It will save you a lot of headache later on.

Happy Halloween 2012

This year, for Halloween, I decided to draw my own greeting card for my blog. I wanted to draw a moon and shiny stars and a spooktacular cat with a tail that stood up along with my Halloween trick or treat girl but alas time and lack of talent for drawing did not permit. So, in the end this is all I managed, a simple Happy Halloween from Mumsgather card.

Happy Halloween 2012!

Easy Halloween Craft For Kids - How To Make A Pop-Up Halloween Card

I love pop-up cards. They are very easy to make and they are fun. Kids can easily do this on their own in very little time and with little mess. Younger kids may need some supervision handling the scissors. In this post, I am going to show you how to make a pop-up Halloween card in 8 easy steps. The steps on how to make a pop-up card will be shown to you in an easy step by step picture tutorial. So easy, even a child can do it on his or her own using these instructions.

Step 1 On How To Make A Pop-Up Halloween Card. You will need construction paper, scissors, glue and colored pen and other fun things like glitter pens, accessories and other craft embellishments including stickers etc to decorate your card. Get them in the Halloween and fall colors of Orange, Green, Brown or Black and White. I haven't got all of those other stuff here as I am just going to show you how to make a basic card. You can get creative and decorate your card in any manner you want.

Step 2 On How To Make A Pop-Up Halloween Card. Use 2 colors. You can use the same color if you want but I like to use two so that my card will have a different color on the inside.

Step 3 On How To Make A Pop-Up Halloween Card. Draw two lines in the middle of the card. You will soon be cutting along those lines to make a tab to hold your 3d pop-up picture.

Step 4 On How To Make A Pop-Up Halloween Card. Cut along the lines and fold the tab inwards to face the inside of your card. Your card will now look like it has a hole in the middle! Don't panic....

Step 6 On How To Make A Pop-Up Halloween Card. Now use the other paper and paste it over your card with the hole in the middle.

Step 7 On How To Make A Pop-Up Halloween Card. Your card now looks like this, no more holes. If you have used two colors like I have, your card will have a dual tone color, one for the cover and another for the inside.

Step 8 On How To Make A Pop-Up Halloween Card. Finally, paste a Halloween picture on your tab. You can draw your own picture. I used a picture I found in one of my children's activity books. Taddaaa.... your pop-up Halloween Card is now ready.

This is a very basic card. Your card should look a lot nicer than this. You can draw a cat, a witch or a ghost and include the words Happy Halloween or Boo! on the front cover. Let's get creative and have fun.
