Going to take a break away from parenting and schooling stuff for today's post.
Recently, I was caught in a bad jam near Mid Valley megamall. I wanted to find out whether it was an exhibition that was causing it so I surfed over to the Mid Valley megamall website. I didn't find any exhibition posted that day but I found their Live Update for car park bays. I think that's a really useful feature. I wish I had known about it earlier. That's why I decided to share it here today.
Many of my friends and relatives have often mentioned to me that they give up on the idea of going to the mall because of car park woes. I think they would find this car park bays live update useful too. It shows you a map of the mall car park with a 30 second live update of the bays available so you can plan your drive there. Nice!
Here are some screenshots I took from the website. On the right are the available parking pays. Plenty as you can see now since it is 7.45am at the point of writing. The numbers will be different by noon. Below is a map of the parking zones. I tested out the update by checking the numbers as we drove past one day. It was accurate. Fantastic. Now, I can plan my trips there.
I hope this post was useful for you. Share it if it was.

Chinese Character Worksheet Generator
While I was researching the translation from Chinese to pinyin and with English meaning for yesterday's post, I came across a very useful and interesting site which I would like to share.
This site called Purple Culture has lots of interesting Chinese tools including the Chinese character to Pinyin converter which I was searching for.
It also has a Chinese Character Worksheet Generator. Now, there are many sites out there which provide this Chinese Character worksheet tool, I rather like this one because it does not require any registration, is free and is in English.
Here's how to use this Chinese Character Worksheet Generator. First navigate to the site Purple Culture and click on the Chinese Tools tab. You will see a page like the following one which shows you all the tools available on the site. Do browse through them if you have the time. They are all interesting and useful. However in this post, I will be talking about the Practice Sheet Generator. Click on that link as shown in the red arrow in the screen shot below.
Cool right? This is very useful for Chinese Mandarin learners as well as parents coaching their kids in Chinese.
I also like the "Vocabulary List Generator" in the Chinese tools link. It allows you to generate a list of chosen vocab (which you can type in or copy and paste in). The list gives you the vocab in Chinese, pinyin and with English translation.
Super love this site!

Your next steps are as follows (Please refer to the screenshot below with the corresponding numbers).
- Type your Chinese character in the box provided. If you are not sure how to type in Chinese, you can read my previous post here on how to add the Chinese keyboard on your computer to input Chinese characters or you can copy and paste a Chinese character you come across online.
- Select "stroke order". This is useful so that an example of the stroke order for the Chinese character will be shown on the worksheet. (Updated: Stroke order is no longer a free feature so leave it out if you don't have a paid account)
- Under "No. of traceable characters" select "3" or more if you like. This will print out grey scale characters for you to trace before attempting to write on your own.
- The default font is "Kai Ti". That looks good so leave that alone. Finally, click on the "Generate" button.
I input the following characters which means "I love you" and here is a sample of my Chinese Character Worksheet generated in pdf for me to print out and use. As you can see, it has the stroke order at the top of each character and 3 grey characters for me to practice by tracing before attempting to write on my own.

Tips For Tackling SJKC Science Paper 2 UPSR New Format
There has been a lot of talk and emphasis on the extra English paper in UPSR 2016. However, one should take note that there is significant change in the Science paper as well. Just like the English paper, the Science paper has also been split into two papers. The difference is, English is now counted as two subjects but Science is still considered as one subject.
Notwithstanding that, there is no denying that the Science paper is now two separate papers, one hour for each paper whereas previously it used to be one paper to be done in one hour 15 minutes. In other words, there is now more emphasis on Science Paper 2 (which used to be Part 2 of the one Science paper).
The new Science Paper 2 has 8 subjective questions which are broken into sub-parts eg. Q1a (i), (ii), (iii), (iv), Q2b, Q3c(i), (ii), Q4d(i), (ii) and so on and so forth.
Now, here's the tip. For SJKC students, do make sure your child knows all of the following terms. Not only memorize the terms but know and understand what they mean. Previous format, may use these terms to ask the questions directly. The new format may ask questions based on your understanding of the terms and may not use the terms to ask questions.
If you are a non-Chinese speaking parent who send your child to SJKC, you should also recognize and know these terms so you can help your child. In Science, we can teach our kids concepts in English and then get them to learn the important terms in Chinese.
To answer paper 2 questions on experiments, the student MUST know and UNDERSTAND the Science terms associated with conducting experiments. Do not be confused or use the terms interchangeably.
Here is a free printable of the Science terms in Chinese. Pinyin as well as English translation has been provided for non-Chinese families who send their kids to SJKC to help mum or dad assist their child with homework or revision. The printable is for our website members only.
Members may go to the link below to download the free printable.

Strategy For Answering UPSR 2016 New Format Chinese Paper 1 on Pemahaman
This post is for parents who are trying to help their kids with the Chinese Paper 1 for UPSR 2016. Non-Chinese speaking parents can refer to this to inform tutors on which area to teach should they lack the focus.
Before you read this post, please refer to our previous post on the UPSR 2016 Chinese Paper Format What's New. This will give you an idea of the new format for the Chinese Pemahaman or Paper 1 of the Chinese Paper for UPSR.
In short, there is now more emphasis on Paper one. The time allotted has been increased from 50 minutes to 1 hour 15 minutes while the total marks for this paper is now 50 instead of 40.
Previously the paper had 40 objective questions, 1 mark each. Now the paper is divided into two parts. The first part has 20 objective questions, 1 mark each. While the 2nd part has 5 subjective questions. Some of these questions have sub questions so there are actually 9 questions in all if you count all the sub parts. 30 marks for the 9 subjective questions.
The main difference is previously there were 2 passages. In the new format, there are 3 passages. The third passage is rather long and requires subjective answers.
Previous Format Chinese Pemahaman Paper 1
40 Marks
Q1-Q30 - Various Multiple Choice questions
Q31-35 - Passage followed by multiple choice questions
Q36-40 - Passage followed by multiple choice questions
New Format Chinese Pemahaman Paper 1
Part 1 (20 marks)
Q1-Q4 - Various Multiple Choice questions
Q5-Q12 - Passage followed by multiple choice questions
Q13-Q20 - Ancient Chinese Passage followed by multiple choice questions
Part 2 (30 marks)
Q21 a,b,c,d - Subjective questions
Q22a,b, Q23a,b, Q24, Q25 - Long Passage (about 2 pages) followed by subjective questions (see example below)
In the recent UPSR diagnostic test, this is what happened. Students score part 1 easily obtaining 18 or 19 out of 20 marks but were pulled down by Part 2 ie the subjective part which has a higher weightage in terms of marks.
It is therefore clear, that emphasis should be given on how to answer this section ie Chinese Paper 1 (Pemahaman) Part 2. The strategy for answering UPSR 2016 New Format Chinese Paper 1 on Pemahaman is therefore to do a lot of practice exercises on this part of the paper especially questions 22-25 which comes after the long third passage. There are no shortcut methods. Lots of reading and practice required.
When buying workbooks, look for one that says 理解练习 This means Practice Pemahaman. Look inside the book to make sure it is the new format practice ie with subjective questions (not objective ones) and make sure sample answers are provided.
Extra Tip:
To improve on Q13-Q20 on ancient Chinese Passage, watch Chinese history cartoons like the Three Kingdoms. This is to help improve on the general knowledge to help in the understanding of such passages

Where To Shop For Your Kids Online
I run a parents Facebook group, the Malaysia Primary and Secondary School Parents group and one of the things that parents often ask is "Where can I buy......?" For example.....
To answer all your questions, there this one place where you can find all of the above and more! Shopee, your one stop mobile marketpace where you can buy and sell in less than 30 sec, anytime, anywhere. Shopee is available for both iOS and Android users. Shopee marketplace has a wide range of items catered for all age groups. In fact, you can easily list and sell your items as well with just a few steps. Aside from that, Shopee is safe, fun and convenient.
One more thing about Shopee, it’s not all about shopping. If you overspend on shopping, you can always become a seller yourself. All you need to do is just take a photo, upload it, fill the details and you've become a seller. Easy peasy. There's no download cost, no listing fee or commission.
Where can I buy milk bottles for a baby boy?
Where can I buy a cute bento box for my child's recess?
Where can I buy labels to label my kids school stuff?
What gift can I buy for my child who loves Hello Kitty?
Where can I buy a Lego Minifigures complete set for my boy's birthday?
Where can I buy a carom board for teens?

Apart from just shopping on the app, you can also shop in the Shopee Mall. It is so convenient and with Shopee Guarantee, you can rest assure that you are protected as a buyer all the time.
Speaking of Shopee Guarantee, there is an added security whenever you make a purchase on the app because Shopee becomes a middle person to ensure you as a buyer receive the items first before releasing the payment to the seller. With Shopee Guarantee you can request for a refund or return the item if you are unsatisfied with it. The best news is there is no middle person charge, w hich means the app is totally free and has no hidden commission fees.
Another great feature of the app is you can Chat with the seller directly to find out more about the product or bargain on the price before buying. One best feature I like is you can shop by categories, through search or by browsing all. That's how I found all of the above items for kids.

Educating Kids About The Current Heat Wave
Malaysia is currently experiencing a heat wave which could last till the end of March or even longer according to news reports.
Here's what we can do as parents. We can and should educate our children on the effects of heat wave. We should also advice them on what to do.
Let's not forget to tell our kids to do the following:
Here's what we can do as parents. We can and should educate our children on the effects of heat wave. We should also advice them on what to do.
Let's not forget to tell our kids to do the following:
- Drink more water than usual and don't wait until thirsty to drink
- Inform teacher if they feel uncomfortable or unwell in the classroom or during activities
As parents we can do the following for our kids and ourselves too:
- Make sure the kids wear light comfortable clothing at home
- Ensure that the home is cool and comfortable
- Encourage the children to take cool showers or baths
- Stay indoors on hot days
- Apply sunscreen when going outdoors
- Check local news for extreme heat alerts and safety tips
- Learn the symptoms of heat illness
There has been some confusion over who decides heatwave school closures. Do not pay heed to unreliable sources of information through whatsapp or social media. There were some hoax "announcements" being shared recently.
Below are some of the official links you can check for the latest news about the heatwave. (quoted from the sharing on the Malaysia MOE website on Monday March 21, 2016 at 8.16am)

Homeschooling Malaysia Parents Blogs
Considering homeschooling in Malaysia but don't know how to go about it? The best thing is to talk to parents who have been through it. However, how do you approach these parents. You don't know of anyone personally. That is the reason for this post. You can read up from parents who have been through it. Here are some parent bloggers who have either researched on homeschooling or home schooled their kids.
- Mazlyn's Blog - In this blog post dated April 7, 2014 she talks about her research for homeschooling. At the time, she did not actually homeschool her kids but opted for the hybrid approach (I am not sure about now). Read the comments too to get an interesting view from the discussion on homeschooling in Malaysia
- Chit Chat Over Coffee blogspot - This is an excellent post dated May 9, 2012 when she pulled her child out of mainstream school at age 11 due to her dyslexia. Highly recommended to read if you are thinking of homeschooling in Malaysia. She goes on to talk about what is homeschooling, why homeschool, the legalities and implication, how to get started and more. Though just 4 months into homeschooling at the time she wrote this post, you will benefit from reading her been there done that sharing.
- Homeschooling Malaysia Wordpress Blog is by a homeschooling parent. You can read up about her homeschooling adventures and browse over to the "Why We Homeschool" tab. However, I did not link to the homepage but rather to the blog post on 5 Things To Know Before You Begin Homeschooling written on September 29, 2015 for you to get a very good insight from this homeschooling parent.
- Homeschooling Frontier - you can find lots of information on this website run by homeschooling parents. For starters, read this one on homeschooling FAQs including the concept of homeschooling, how many students are homeschooled in Malaysia, the legalities, curriculum options, challenges and more. Navigate to "My Homeschool Journey" to read the musings of the homeschooled child which links to more articles from other homeschool children.
- Hafidz FCU Malaysian Homeschooling - I've linked to the article on "Mengapakah Perlu Homeschool (1) on this family's homeschooling journey. Check out the sidebar of this blog for more links to other Malaysian Homeschooling Blogs and Muslim Homeschooling Blogs.
There are many other such homeschool blogs by Malaysian parents and students who are homeschooled. This will give you a very good idea about homeschooling in Malaysia.

Roald Dahl's The BFG And Other Roald Dahl Stories
Roald Dahl's The BFG is coming to the big screen some time in July and I can't wait for it! I'm a huge fan of Roald Dahl ever since I bought my boy a set of Roald Dahl books for his birthday and he highly recommended that I should read them too. I did and I loved his writing. His stories are full of adventure of the craziest kind and filled with zany made up words that kids will adore.
The BFG stands for The Big Friendly Giant is about a little girl's adventures with a scary looking giant who turns out to be a kind hearted soul. I won't say any more than this less I inadvertently give away spoilers for The Big Friendly Giant movie which is a Disney movie directed by Steven Spielberg, the 3 master storytellers of our time.
Speaking of movies, which will you do first? Will you watch the movie first or read the book first? Well, whichever you choose, you can get the book and read it now or you can keep the book and read it after you watch the movie.
Books Kinokuniya Malaysia Webstore is currently having a Roald Dahl promo from now till end of March 2016. Just enter the promo code RD10 for 10% off selected Roald Dahl titles including:

Online Malaysian Textbooks For SK, SJKC and SJKT
Whether your child is studying in SK, SJKC or SJKT, their school bags are heavy. As parents, we often try to lessen the burden by asking the children to leave some non-essential text books behind in school if possible either in their desks or in lockers if the school has them. However, sometimes kids forget to bring their textbooks home. Sometimes a friend takes their books home mistakenly. So what do you do when your child says
"Ma, I have Math homework today but I forgot to bring my Math textbook home/I can't find my Math textbook."
Some parents try to overcome this by buying their own textbooks. Currently textbooks are on loan for all Malaysian kids. However, some parents buy their own as spare or to split up the textbooks into little "modules" to lighten the bag load. Even then, spare textbooks can get misplaced too sometimes.
Here is another alternative besides spare textbooks and rushing out to buy a textbook, going to school to search frantically or borrowing from a friend. They are Online Malaysian Textbooks For SK, SJKC or SJKT. Yes, we do have online textbooks available for Malaysian parents. Not every textbook is available and there are some which are incomplete. However, you can still find quite a number of textbooks available online for your use. You will also find these online useful for taking a sneak peek at the next standard or level of books.
One of the sources of online textbooks is FrogAsia, a virtual learning environment provided for schools. You can access FrogAsia via your 1BestariNet ID. 1BestariNet is a nationwide project carried out by the Malaysian Ministry of Education and YTL. Under this project, every parent, student and teacher has been provided with an ID that enables access to a variety of online learning tools.
Here is how you can access the online textbooks. Most schools would have instructed the students to create an id or to inform parents to create one but if you haven't done so yet, here's what you need to do.
Before you proceed, for parents with kids in Standard one, your child's school may give you the id and password to access. You can do the steps below if you lose that id and password given to you. However, the school has to set it up first before you can do that.
IMPORTANT!
UPDATE JULY 2016: UPON CHECKING THE WEBSITE WE FOUND THAT THE INTERFACE HAS CHANGED. TO LOGIN GO TO THIS LINK. ON THE TOP RIGHT CORNER, CLICK ON HOP IN IF YOU HAVE AN EXISTING ACCOUNT. IF NOT, CLICK ON I'M A NEW VLE USER AND FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS THERE.

Step 1. Go to this link. You will be greeted with the page you see below
Step 2. Follow the steps on the right side bar. Do not click "Hop In". Do the Steps 1,2 and 3 first. Click on the Pink, Green and Orange buttons in that order.
Step 3. Retrieve your id. (Pink Button) You may be required to key in your name and I/C number to retrieve your id. (If it says id not found, then you may have to wait for your child's school to key in your child's info to the system first before you get access. You may get a id and password from the school, in which case you can just use the id and password assigned to you and follow the instructions given by your child's school).
Step 4. Retrieve password. (Green Button) You may be required to key in your mobile phone number to retrieve your password. Click "Send Password" and your password will be sent to your mobile phone. (You can change the password later but try to remember it)
Step 5. Activate your id. (Orange Button) You will need to key in your id and password which you received earlier via your mobile to verify your account.
Step 6. Finally, you may now click on "Hop In". You will need to key in your id and password each time you "Hop In" so remember it.
Step 7. When you are in, you can see the names of your children on the left bar. You will also see links to your children's school on the left side bar. If your children's school is active in using the site, you will be able to see more activity here. Otherwise, nothing much to see. Let's move on to retrieve those online textbooks
Step 8. Once you "Hop In", Click on "Frog Store" on the left side bar. You will be greeted with the following page. Then, click on "Books" at the top left hand side.
Step 9. You will be greeted with the page below. Do a search by clicking on the drop down menu's (circled in red). Select your level, subject and whether you want free or paid. (Malaysian online textbooks are provided free). Then click "Go". You can also do a search for specific books by typing in the search box at the top right corner of the page.
Step 10. Example: I did a search by clicking on Level "Tahun Satu" and "Go", leaving the other choices blank. This is what I see. Click on "Add" to add the book you want to your library. Now you can access the online textbooks from your library.
Note: Once you have added the online textbook to your library, you can access it from the "My Library" icon whenever you "Hop In" to FrogAsia. The book icon that represents "My Library" is located at the top right hand corner of the page as shown below.
After completing the initial steps above, the next time you want to access your online textbook, just do the following steps.
- Click "Hop In"
- Key in your id and password
- Click on "Frog Store"
- Go to "My Library" to access your online textbooks (as shown below)
Besides books, you can also access, images, videos, and audio etc. I hope this guide helps you. I was very confused the first time I used the site as there are too many links to click and I didn't know where to navigate.
Here is another online resource for online textbooks for SK and SJKC. I have not seen SJKT textbooks in this link. This is an online drive that was created and shared on social media. Unfortunately, I do not know who the creator is so I can give credit. This link is much easier to access compared to the FrogAsia one above. Just one click here to access the Malaysian Online Textbooks.
You may find the resources above useful when your child needs to refer to his/her textbook for homework but the textbook is missing. Do note that you will have to replace missing textbooks at the end of the school year when the school collects the books on loan for next year's students.
Did you find the above post useful? If so, help to share it with your friends with school going kids.
Learning Centre For Home School In Cheras
So you want to home school your kids but you don't know how and you do not have any connections or network. What do you do now? Consider an alternative option. A learning Centre for home schooling.
Some who do homeschooling say that there is no such thing as a homeschooling centre because homeschooling should be taught at home, hence the term "home" schooling. However, homeschooling is not easy, especially if you do it on your own. You need to have a good network of other parents so that your child has a chance to mix around with other children, get together to do projects and share teaching duties with other parents. Not all of us are expert educators in every subject so some home schoolers specialize in subjects and alternate teaching with their network. That's why in the past home schooling used to be done in ready communities eg. a faith based organization.
These days, there is a new option for parents who
Let's take a look at one such learning centre in Cheras. It is called Kensington Academy. Kensington Academy offers IGCSE courses for their students which is the preferred course for most home schoolers.
Below you can see the comparison between public school and IGCSE as shown on the Kensington Academy website. IGCSE is offered at Kensington Academy starting from Year 1 or age 6. However, you can join at any time. For example, you can study at a public primary school up to Std 5, then move on to Kensington Academy to do your Year 7 which is equivalent to Form 1 level in public school. Alternatively, you can do your UPSR, then move on to Year 8 at Kensington subject to an aptitude test, interview with the principal or course coordinator and approval of your application.
Below are a list of the subjects your child may be studying under the IGCSE syllabus in Kensington.
At Kensington Academy, students can take the IGCSE exams that many home schoolers and international school students do. They can do projects together and have the social interaction just like in public school but at a fraction of a fee of an international school.
To know more about the programme, facilities and admission requirements at Kensington Academy, visit their website Kensington Academy or Facebook Page. Located at Cheras, the academy also arranges transport for students at a minimum fee.
These days, there is a new option for parents who
- do not wish to send their kids to public school
- do not have the networks for home school
- do not have the know how, patience or time for home schooling
- prefer not to send to private or international schools because they want to save their funds for tertiary education

Though the ideas are plentiful, we can't share them all and being Malaysians we haven't even begun to include our local fairs like bihun goreng, nasi lemak, etc.
Hopefully these pictures give you some inspiration and some ideas of your own.
