How to Make Your Own Free Personalized April 2018 Calendar

I like to make printable personalized calendars and often make my own using software like the Microsoft Publisher. However, there are also online sites with lovely templates you can use to make your own free personalized calendar.

eg 1: Cartoon Cat April 2018 Calendar with Sunday as the first day of the week

Today, I'm going to share with you a site that does just that. The name of the site is called Greetings Island. The front page of the website reads "Free Personalized Greeting Cards and Invitations. Download, Print and Send Online". It has lots of free printable Greeting Cards and Invitations templates to choose from. You can personalize them and send them as e-cards or you can personalize them, download, print and send them as physical cards with a cover and inside pages with your own text or photos for those who like to personalize with photos.

eg 2: Animal Design April 2018 Calendar with Monday as the first day of the week

You can also make free printable calendars on the site. I have made several free printable April 2018 calendars. There are many design templates to choose from. Below are just a few examples. You can select floral prints, animal designs, cartoon images or insert your own photo

eg 3: Watercolor Splash April 2018 Calendar with Monday as the first day of the week

How to create your printable calendar:

First you click on the design you want, then you select full year or one month. Full year here means a full year's month by month calendar, starting with the cover (if you want) followed by the current and subsequent months. It does not mean a full year's calendar on one page.

eg 4: Floral Design April 2018 Calendar with Monday as the first day of the week

For the monthly calendars, you can decide whether you prefer your calendars to start the first day of the week on Monday or Sunday. Next, you can add National Holidays. Only the United States, Canada, United Kingdom and Australia holidays are available for adding. Next, you can add in Religious holidays where you can pick from Christian, Jewish or Muslim religious holidays.

For calendars with personalized photos, you will be prompted to add your photo, either from your computer, Facebook or Dropbox. The calendars are available in several colours. Pick the colour you like and then click Finish and your free personalized calendar will automatically be downloaded in pdf format. Cool isn't it?

Go here to test it out: https://www.greetingsisland.com/

Free Printable Weekly Reward Chart For Kids

We've been posting up Free Printables for our members regularly and recently we were pleasantly surprised to receive this pretty Weekly Reward Chart with complements from Hobby Hop In for our members to print and use.

This free printable reward chart for kids is a weekly one. It is kept blank so you can fill in your own tasks. Each day of the week and a total tally make up the rows. At the bottom of the chart are blank spaces for you to write-in your child's goals.

To Reward Or Not To Reward?

It depends on the child. Some children are more motivated by rewards then others. Using a reward chart helps kids think about goals and aiming to achieve their targets. It is a good lesson in life. However, it should not be overused as you may find that it loses its meaning when your child starts hankering for rewards and start equating chores and homework etc with it.

Having said that though, I think reward charts are a good thing for short term goals. It is also useful for teaching children the importance of household chores and helping around the house. Rewards need not be monetary. A hug, story time, an hour at the park can all be rewards too.

Members can click on the button below to download and print this free printable weekly reward chart for kids.

Malaysia June School Holidays Dates And Free May Calendar 2016

It's May 2016 and while designing my free printable calendar for May 2016 I realized that May has a lot of interesting dates and celebrations for parents, students and teachers.

Here are some of the dates worth taking note of in May 2016

Labour Day 2016

We recently enjoyed a nice long weekend due to this annual holiday which falls on 1st May. It is the exam season so those who are preparing for exams in early May may have taken the opportunity to do some last minute revision whereas those who have completed exams in end April may have had a good time relaxing after the exams. Either way, it was a good weekend.

Wesak Day 2016

The date for Wesak Day this year is 21 May 2016. In Malaysia, Wesak Day is celebrated on the fifteenth day of the fourth month in the Chinese Lunar Calendar. This means that if you are looking at the Gregorian or western calendar, the dates will be different yearly. 21 May 2016 is a Saturday.

Mother's Day 2016

Mother's Day is celebrated on various dates around the world. In Malaysia, as with many other parts of the world, Mother's Day is celebrated on the second Sunday of May each year. This means that in 2016, Mother's Day will fall on 8th May 2016 which happens to be the second Sunday in May 2016. It's very early this year because the first Sunday is the first of May.

Teacher's Day 2016

Just like Mother's Day, Teacher's Day is also celebrated on different dates around the world. In Malaysia, Teacher's Day is celebrated on 16 May 2016. 16th of May 2016 happens to be a Monday. Some schools may be still busy with exams or marking of exam papers. Quite often, schools may postpone the celebration to another day, sometimes on a Friday or the Friday just before the mid year school holidays. Sometimes it is celebrated on the Friday preceding the actual date. Different schools may choose a different date to have their Teacher's Day celebrations. So, if you are planning to prepare a token for your child's teachers, do check the actual day it will be celebrated in your child's school.

Mid Year School Holidays 2016 Malaysia

The Mid Year School holidays is for 2 weeks starting from 27 May 2016 if you are in Johor, Kedah, Terengganu or Kelantan or 28 May 2016 for all other states.

All of the above dates are marked on our free printable May 2016 calendar to facilitate your planning.

30 Commonly Used Math Terms For Kids Bilingual English and Chinese

This post is for all English speaking parents who send their kids to Chinese school or commonly known as SJKC in Malaysia.

Helping kids with homework is not an easy thing. It requires patience and time. Even more so when you do not know the language.

Kids in SJKC have to study Math and Science in Chinese. They used to have to study it in two languages doing Math and Science both in Chinese as well as English. Although I would have preferred Math to be taught in English, I was secretly glad when it was reduced to just one language because it reduced the kids burden. Burden in terms of having to sit for extra papers as well as burden in carrying workbooks, textbooks and exercise books to school.

However, one of the problems faced by kids who come from homes where families speak in English, Malay, Tamil or Chinese dialects other than Mandarin is the lack of practice and exposure in the language. If they are weak in their Mandarin subject, they will have trouble in their Math and Science in Chinese even if they understand the concepts well.

One of the things we've done as banana parents is to teach our kids Math and Science in English. That way, at least half the battle is won when they understand the concepts well. The other half of the battle is to help them with the Math and Science terminology or vocabulary.

In this post, I have come up with 30 commonly used math terms in English with Chinese translation and pinyin as well. These are very basic terms for kids just starting out in Primary one or Standard 1. Things like addition, subtraction, multiplication etc. These terms will be used in all other areas in Math whether you are studying the topic on Money, Time, Volume, Mass, Shapes etc. Every topic in Math requires basic calculation.

You will also find that if you make an effort to help your child master some commonly used math terms, by standard 3 and higher, they will be all right because in Math practice, the sums may get harder and harder but the basic terms do not change. You may learn some new topic specific terms but the basic calculation terms will remain the same.

I hope you find these 30 commonly used Math terms in English, Chinese and pinyin useful as a Cheat Sheet to help your kids with homework. You can also get your kids to learn these terms well so that they recognize the terms easily when they come across them in a question.

This free printable math term is password protected for members only.
Members can login here to download and print them.

As a  parent who do not know Chinese myself, I had to rely heavily on Google translate and a Chinese to pinyin converter to come up with this list.

As a parent who do not know Chinese with kids in SJKC, I use a lot of online tools and apps which are freely available. I share some of them below:

• How To Use Google Translate For Education
• 5 Best Apps For Learning Chinese With Your Kids
• A Review Of The Baidu Translation App With Image Recognition
• What Is A Good Chinese To English Dictionary App For Learning Chinese
• Science Experiment Terms You Should Know - Bilingual English and Chinese With Pinyin
• Chinese Character Worksheet Generator

I agonized over the decision on whether to send my kids to SJKC and was undecided right up to the last minute! I wrote this ebook as a guide for parents who go through the same thing "Should I or should I not send my kids to Chinese school?" "Am I doing the right thing?"

Year after year, parents are asking themselves this question and go through the exact same dilemma I did. If you know of anyone going through that dilemma now, do recommend them my book "Banana Mom's Guide To Preparing For Chinese School - For Non-Chinese Speaking Families." Thank you.

Free Printable February 2016 Calendar With Valentine's Day And Chinese New Year Theme

Free Printable 2016 Calendar

February is an exciting month because it usually welcomes the Chinese New Year as well as Valentine's Day. It is also the month of love and romance because not only does Valentine's Day fall in the month of February, Chap Goh Meh or the 15th and last night of Chinese New Year is sometimes referred to as the Chinese Valentine's Day because this is the day when maidens look for love by throwing mandarin oranges into the sea.

This year, February 2016 is extra special because it is a leap year. It also has four of every day. 4 Sundays, 4 Mondays, 4 Tuesdays and so on. I received a whatsapp message that says this only happens in 823 years so you will never see this again in your lifetime!

So for this free printable February 2016 calendar, I was torn between the two themes. Chinese New Year or Valentine's? Red or Pink? Roses or Cherry Blossoms? Heart Shapes or Lanterns? So many choices. In the end I decided to create a pink and yellow calendar with Cherry Blossoms and a heart shape. I hope you enjoy the calendar as much as I enjoyed creating it.

Parents can print this calendar to countdown the Chinese New Year together with their kids. Don't forget to mark down the spring cleaning days, new clothes shopping days and balik kampung days.

For those not celebrating the Chinese New Year, you can still countdown to balik kampung or simply relaxing during the festive school holidays which is up to a week or 9 days off including the weekends. Enjoy! It's only 2 weeks to go. How quickly time flies.

Free Printable - 55 Nilai Murni Translated From BM To English

Nilai Murni or Moral Values. I first came across this term when my child was in Standard Three during primary school. I thought that moral values or nilai murni was something that was only taught in moral lessons or pendidikan moral. However, Nilai Murni features heavily in the teaching of Bahasa Malaysia in our primary schools syllabus and carries on into secondary schools as well. In fact, there is a whole section on it in the UPSR paper 2.

At this point of writing, it is still included in the upcoming UPSR on 8 September 2015. However the format may change next year. Even then, although the format may be changed, you probably can't run away from learning Nilai Murni as part of the curriculum for Bahasa Malaysia in schools. It is very much a part of our syllabus. My form 1 girl still learns a lot of Nilai Murni in her school work.

Free Printable September 2015 Calendar With Malaysia Public Holidays And School Holidays

September 2015 is upon us! September is the month of exams for kids in Malaysia public schools kicking off with the UPSR examinations starting on 8 September 2015 to 10 September 2015.

Free Printable Motivational Quotes Bookmark For Kids

I took a long time to do my free printable cute girl's bookmark. However, this free printable motivational quotes bookmark for kids only took me a little while because everything has been set up and ready.

These kids bookmarks are double sided. You can choose to print either just one side or both. The pages are aligned so you can print them on both sides. You will achieve best results if you laminate them. As before I included a "This Book Belongs To" on the bookmark.

You can also get your child to write in with pencil the date he or she first started on a particular book so they can see how long they take to finish a book. Use pencil so you can erase and use it again for another book. You won't need to fill in this part if your child finishes their books in one reading in a day or two like mine.

The quotes on the bookmarks are about making friends, trying your best, being happy and being kind. Quotes are in front with a continuation of the saying at the back of the bookmark.

Free Printable Blank Timetable For School Children

I was going to do this post in January when we need it the most. However, I will be busy in January because my girl will be going to secondary school for the first time. It will be afternoon session for her whereas her brother is in the morning session so next year there will be more coordination involved in terms of our schedule.

Anyway, I am from Malaysia and this post is for the members of my Parenting Group on Facebook for Primary and Secondary Parents in Malaysia. In Malaysia, our semester begins in January. One of the very first things the school teacher will give out is the school timetable so to members of the group, you will be needing this free printable blank timetable for school children on the first week of January.

I've created one for boys and one for girls based on the template my children created for their school timetables. Since it is based on their actual school timetable, there are enough columns in there to fill in for the number of periods or lessons in our SJKC (Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Cina) or SK (Sekolah Kebangsaan). All you have to do is fill in the times which I have left blank since each school is different and right a big "RECESS" OR "REHAT" right in the middle in each of the squares.

If your child does not have Saturday classes then you can ask your child to use that part to write some notes. For example, there will be library periods days or there may be two periods for gym but they are required to bring the gym clothes on one day and the gym book (or rather Health and Fitness book) on another day.

On certain days, the teacher may tell them to bring a different book for the same subject. They will have lots of exercise books for each subject. For example for BM (Bahasa Malaysia) they may have Bina Ayat (Making Sentences), Ejaan (Spelling), BM1, BM2 (usually for Pemahaman or Comprehension, there are two books so they are interchangeable and the child will have one while the other is with teacher for marking). The older kids may have these and in addition to that Karangan (Essays) and Nilai Murni (Moral Values). 6 exercise books for just one subject and the child is supposed to remember which book to bring on which day! Similarly, they may have to bring  several exercise books for Math, English and so on. So a proper timetable is crucial!

My children learned to use Microsoft Publisher in school and taught me how to use it. I suggested they created their school timetable with it and I'm really glad I did because they never lost a timetable again. Not when it is A4 sized, put over thick paper and wrapped with a book wrapper. It is easy for them to find too as they slip it at the back of their school bags.

This is how you do it. Print out the free timetable below. Then find an old brochure or even the back of an art block and cut it out to fit the paper. Next put the timetable on the hard paper. You don't have to paste the timetable on the thick paper because that makes it crumpled if not done nicely. Just put it over, then wrap the whole thing with a book wrapper. If you like, you can print two and make one for your child's wall or table at home or one for yourself as a backup.

2015 Calendar With Malaysia School Holidays

There are only 2 weeks left for the school term in 2014 so it is time for us parents to plan for the next year. One of the things we should do is to get our children to pack up their own study tables or work and play areas to get ready for the next year. To help ourselves get organized, we should also print a 2015 Calendar with Malaysia School Holidays and paste it where everyone can see and refer to.

You can use this calendar to mark important school dates like Sports Day, Funfare Day, Children's Day, Concert or other weekly activities, tuition, extra-curricular activities that your children attend. If you forget a certain activity, you won't be the first parent to do so. This free printable 2015 calendar with Malaysia School Holidays will help you, I hope.

Next year there is something new called Hari Ganti from 16 November to 20 November 2015. This is replacement school days for festivals.

I have created two free printable calendars for kids for the year 2015 which includes Malaysia School Holidays. I have not included the public holidays because some of those are subject to changes. You can get your children to color in or to mark down those dates once they are confirmed. I hope you enjoy these 2015 calendars. I have done two, a blue one for boys and a pink one for girls. If you have both a boy and a girl, you can print both so they each can have one of their own.

Please note that the 2015 Malaysia School Holiday Calendar Sets below are for Group B only ie for Negeri Perlis, Pulau Pinang, Perak, Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka, Pahang, Sabah, Sarawak, Wilayah
Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur, Labuan & Putrajaya.
